Tuesday: June 05, 2007 - Nappy Time Nappy Time Man, I have been slacking on the old blog. I feel like recently I've been sitting in front of the computer more than ever so I've been hesitant about taking on the difficult task of posting a blog entry.

Let's see, what's happened the past week. I've lost at poker a few times, including an especially bad showing on Sunday where I managed to go out first in an at-home poker game. I think after playing "out" so many times I just wanted to play a lot of hands so I did. Stupid decision. I'll post the new PCS standings tomorrow (no really) once I dig out the formula.

I'm having a hard time putting a committee together for my thesis since everyone is out of town. Looks like I might have defend after July 2nd and let it post in the fall semester. That sucks since I cranked it out thinking I could have it on my transcripts at the end of the summer. Time will tell.

Wednesday: June 06, 2007 - Always the Bridesmaid Always the Bridesmaid Jamie was able to get out of her training session early last night and she and I drove out to Fourth Quarter for some poker where we found Chris and indulged in some beers and crinkle fries. I finished second twice and fourth twice. Both times that I finished second my cards turned into absolute crap once it got to heads-up. Jamie bullied my continuous 5-2 off-suited hands to finish her comeback from two chips. The second time I pushed the other guy in with J/4 suited and got spanked. I was just so happy for a face card I didn't know what to do. My cards *might* have rivaled Ian's on Sunday for the worst batch of heads-up cards in the history of poker. Anyway, as promised here are the PCS rankings from Sunday:

Week 10:
1) Chris (IH,JB)
2) Ian (RH, CP)
3) Jamie
4) Renee (MC)
5) Christen
6) Mike

PCS Rankings:
1) Mike (2.40)
2) Ian (2.88)
3) Chris (3.00)
4) Jamie (4.57)
5) Christen (4.85)
6) Renee (4.90)

Weekend: June 10, 2007 - Anniversadventure Anniversadventure Jamie and I celebrated a belated four year anniversary by driving up to the ATL to see the Braves beat the Cubs. The stadium was filled with Cubs fans--maybe 30%-40% and truth be told, all of the Braves fans were very nice. The back-and-forth was all good-spirited except possibly when people were in our seats when we first got there. Even that worked out fine though. We hit the Ikea on the way up so Jamie could look at desks for her new apartment in Philly but we came out empty handed. Those Ikeas are some big stores. When we were up there a few years ago they had just opened and it seemed like there was an infinite amount of floors and displays. While it was still overwhelming this time, it didn't seem nearly as impressive. We stayed at the Hilton and it was pretty nice. Always feels good to pad the pockets of Paris, you know? Charity work. On the way back we stopped at some crappy outlet mall and I bought a T-shirt since it was 100% and I had only brought a long-sleeved shirt with me. It was a lot of fun and I'd definitely make the trip again.

Special thanks to Chris for watching my mean pit bull while we were gone!

Monday: June 11, 2007 - Minor League Baseball Minor League Baseball How much would it suck to perpetually be on the bubble between AAA and Major League baseball? You get called up for one, maybe two games--you get one, maybe two at bats and then you get shipped back to some remote location. I bring this up only because when we saw the Cubs lose to the Braves the Cubs had called up Mike Fontenot and he did really well. He and Ryan Theriot have done exceedingly well this year and I like seeing the new guys play, even if $100m is sitting on the bench at any given time. I like seeing the new guys because they always run out the ground balls. If you were getting paid millions of dollars a month you'd better run those out. Yet they don't.

Jamie's birthday is tomorrow!

Tuesday: June 12, 2007 - Happy Birthday Jamie! Happy Birthday Jamie! Happy Birthday! Jamie's the big 2-4, making the rest of us feel *really* old. Wednesday: June 13, 2007 - 13 of 13 13 of 13 Here's Jamie's 12/12 to celebrate her birthday!

8:30am: With impending shoulder surgery, Jamie gets all the hair ripped out from her underarm. Ouch.

1:15pm: Company picnic. These, friends, are your Floridian tax dollars hard at work.

2:30pm It wouldn't be a day at a rape shelter without subpoenas calling Jamie into court. I blurred out all of the good information but the guy is totally guilty.

6:30pm: Hollywood Video called to give Jamie two free birthday videos. I'm not allowed to rent there because they lost the payment of one of my Lost DVDs. I made a scene in the store. Happy Birthday :/

7:30pm: Quick stop at Publix to get some birthday wine. It's only a bottle more than Jamie drinks on a non-birthday day.

A new dress came in the mail. It matches the neon green walls well I would say.

8:30pm: Time for my haircut. I know how to treat people for their birthday right? That's about half of the hair that came off.

Who's that sexy guy coming out of a haircut? It's me! And look how excited I am to be rid of my mullet.

9:00pm: Oh Abby, it's time for your fur cut. Don't look so excited.

Here's the cake I got from Tasty Pastry. It was delicious!

11:00pm: Wake up Abs! It's time to party!

Give me all your cakes and ice creams. Put them all in my mouth.

Bonus: Here's us at the Cubs/Braves game from last weekend. Look at that mullet!

Sunday: June 17, 2007 - Poker Night Celebration Poker Night Celebration There used to be a time when I'd ask every week "Can anyone beat me in poker?" and now I know the answer--yes, Chris can (and does regularly). He extended his winning streak to two and made a stunning comeback against yours truly and upstart Beth. Beth was visiting and put on an absolute poker clinic for the first 75% of the game. She bullied with the best of them and amassed a huge chip lead early. The poker gods were especially cruel to me this week, ensuring I lost all my hands on the river, including a 3000 chip pot when Beth hit a straight to topple my three jacks. I did my total best to knock her out of the put but she stuck with it and ultimately rendered me as an also-ran for the rest of the game. Ultimately, she too fell to Chris after trying several times to earn her second kill of the game. Kudos to Chris, who took down our largest pot of the year.

Special thanks to Matt and Rob who came out to celebrate Jamie's belated birthday with poker despite mixed results. Hopefully we'll see them both in the future as we keep playing.

Week 11
1) Chris (MC, BS, JB)
2) Mike (IH)
3) Beth (RA)
4) Ian (MF)
5) Jamie (RH)
6) Rob
7) Matt
8) Renee
PCS Rankings:
1) Mike (2.36)
2) Chris (2.81)
3) Ian (3.00)
4) Jamie (4.62)
5) Christen (4.85)
6) Renee (5.18)

Monday: June 18, 2007 - The Wharf: Tallahassee The Wharf: Tallahassee For dinner Jamie took me to The Wharf since I'd been carting her around since her shoulder surgery. Recently I've been trying to eat more fish so I tried the blackened grouper. Not that good. Maybe had it been blackened instead of having a single grain of salt on it it would been delicious but I always stupidly believe restaurants when they say something is going to be blackened. I want it BLACK. I want it covered in savory spices that burn my mouth and make me write blog entries saying it was TOO HOT. That's what I want. I want to complain that it was simply too hot for me to eat.

Back in the day, The Wharf was Manna and way better. The roasted potatoes there eventually caused Jamie to start making them. Mmmm. Their prime rib was good too. It was no Giorgio's blackened prime rib but still not too shabby. Now though, it's almost all seafood and since I had just had raw tuna over the weekend I figured grouper was the way to go. At least I'm finally expanding my foodrizons.

Tuesday: June 19, 2007 - Deadliest Catch Deadliest Catch I've been up late at night working on stuff so I've seen a lot of Deadliest Catch, a show that's been on the Discovery Channel for some time now. Since every episode is EXACTLY THE SAME it must some weird quality that makes you keep watching it. I think the script is exactly the same each episode:
Captain: We aren't catching any crabs.
Deckhand: Oh no.
Greenhorn: I'm stupid
Deckhand: Here, eat this cod heart while it's beating.
Greenhorn: It's gross and I'm lazy and scared and everyone hates me.
eats heart
Captain: He's now a man. Let us give him a jacket with a picture of our boat on the back.
Deckhand: Now our pots are full of crabbies.
All: Hooray! (Go State!)

I make fun of it, but I still watch it when it's on at 1am. It's a job I'd never do but it's fun to think I could when I know damn well I couldn't.

Wednesday: June 20, 2007 - House Flipping House Flipping Could there be a single worse feeling in the world that seeing the house you bought on one of the zillions of "flip that house" shows? Like it wouldn't be bad enough knowing that you paid an extra $60k for a house that you could have fixed up yourself, but seeing how poorly most of the work was done? Seeing that the bathroom water damage was just pained over or that the kitchen tile is held in place by dog excrement and Bazooka bubble gum because the 450-credit-score flipper couldn't afford grout. I'm constantly amazed by how seemingly incompetent people can still make $30k on a house in two months. Even if they have no skills whatsoever, they're still able to somehow make a profit. It makes me want to flip a house. But if I'd feel too guilty knowing I'd put the kitchen cabinets on backwards and clearly you have to be able to repress that feeling.

Enjoy reading all my back entries!

Friday: June 23, 2007 - Cubs Sweep! Cubs Sweep! Over the weekend the Cubs swept the hated White Sox. It's not every day the Cubs win a series, let alone sweep. And for it to be the dreadful White Sox makes it that much sweeter. Both teams are pretty abysmal this year so the Cubs will take what they can get. Unlike most teams, the White Sox starting pitching was pretty good but fortunately for the Cubs their offense was SO anemic that the Cubs scoring two runs a game was plenty. Yeah buddy!

Weekend: June 24, 2007 - Weekend Poker Weekend Poker On Sunday we a large turnout for poker (9) and had a nice grill-out before we sat down to kill each other. Since we played early in the afternoon Tim was able to make the treacherous drive down from Thomasville and hopefully we still continue playing early on Sundays so he can continue to play. I was a little under-prepared with the amount of food I was going to need but that's how it goes. I didn't realize I had the back flames up so high and ended up burning the hot dogs a little bit but after eating a couple I didn't really notice.

Christen put on this week's clinic and killed half of the people playing the epically long game. I'd spent the past few days developing a browser-based poker game and thought after the knowledge I had acquired by coding it I would have been unstoppable. Wrong. At least I lost hands on bad beats instead of the river. I can live with my bad calls a lot better than I can when I get sucked out.

Week 12:
1) Christen (RH,CE,MC,AA)
2) Renee (IH)
3) Chris
4) Mike (JB)
5) Jamie (TB)
6) Tim
7) Amy (J?)
8) Ian
9) Jenn

PCS Rankings
1) Mike (2.50)
2) Chris (2.83)
3) Ian (3.45)
4) Christen (4.38)
5) Jamie (4.38)
6) Renee (4.91)

Monday: June 25, 2007 - PHP Poker Script PHP Poker Script Ok, here's the much-anticipated poker script that I've been working very hard on. It needs some testing but surely you're up to the task of playing some heads-up poker against my website right? Here are the known bugs; please leave me comments if you find some more:
· You don't ever really *win*
· It doesn't always detect an A-5 Straight but will instead credit you with top pair instead
· It doesn't always split the pot correctly when both players have a flush

Essentially, you can "play" against any of the people that regularly plays poker. Since it's heads-up only and your only moves are fold and all-in (for now) each computer player has the traits of the actual people based by my jaded interpretation of how the player plays. There are three factors that weigh into each computer player: tightness, luck and tilt. The higher the tightness, the less likely the other person is to call with fair (or bad) cards. Luck looks at the cards in the computer's hand and gives an extra 1-3% push towards lucky players hitting straights and flushes and takes that same % away from unlucky players. Tilt looks as the current streak of the computer player and if they've won/lost more than three consecutive hands they start calling just about everything. So, without further ado, here are your possible poker combatants.

Mike: Tightness: 5/10, Luck: 4/10, Tilt: Likely

Jamie: Tightness: 4/10, Luck: 6/10, Tilt: Not likely

Chris: Tightness: 4/10, Luck: 5/10, Tilt: Definitely

Ian: Tightness: 9/10, Luck: 1/10 (only because it can't be 0), Tilt: Rare

Renee: Tightness: 2/10, Luck: Random!, Tilt: Likely

Christen Tightness: 7/10, Luck: 7/10, Tilt: Sometimes

Ricky: Tightness: Random!, Luck: Random!, Tilt: Sometimes

Good luck!

Friday: June 29, 2007 - Happy Birthday Kathy! Happy Birthday Kathy! Happy belated birthday! It sucks when a birthday doesn't fall on a blogging day because then my masterful handiwork of near-perfect Photoshopping gets lost to the internet ether. I was surprised to find that I don't have many digital pictures of Kathy so this is is from 2003? Wow, that's old. But not as old as Kathy! Happy Birthday!

Good Things Take Time... -2 days until FSU Football (2010)

Random Picture...
Here's the view from my chair looking straight up. It was too bright to risk going straight into the sun but I was able to build up a nice shade-tan.

Time Machine: 09-07-2009 · 09-07-2008 · 09-07-2007 · 09-07-2006 09-07-2009: I'll start with the good news: my death from the swine flu is no longer imminent. Now, onto the bad news.

WHERE THE HELL WAS FSU'S DEFENSE?! *I* could have been playing cornerback last night. I can easily ignore receivers as the blow past me or trip on my own two feet as a RUNNING BACK shoots past me for a catch in the end zone. Uggggggggh. On the bright side, the offense looked pretty good--at least Christian Ponder and the vaunted offensive line. The running game looked anemic when Jermaine was in there but his backup looked like a punisher. The fact our receivers c(w)ouldn't catch the ball made life rough. Fortson looked like the only guy who actually was willing to take one for the team and try to catch it, although Richard Goodman's catch on the two-point conversion ended with him getting blasted.

Anyway, where was the bloodthirsty FSU defense? Who were these cowards playing constant zone coverage? It doesn't take a PS2 NCAA Football expert very long to realize there's a time and a place for zone but if you want to win you need to MAN UP. Granted, the man coverage, when "utilized", made the secondary look absolutely stupid, with their coverage at least five yards behind the Miami receivers.

Whatever, we'll be good next year.
09-07-2008: It looks like my vice-like grip over NCAA Pick 'Em is officially over. After tweaking "the algorithm" I still finished near the bottom of the picks because I clearly overweighed the section dedicated to "do they like to get upset?". The numbers correctly picked the ECU upset of WV but unfortunately they also picked three more upsets and, knowing that no more than three teams ever get upset in a week, I released WV out of a personal affinity towards the school. I also, until the game started, thought USM was in fact Mississippi State which they are clearly not. Oops.

I went out to Virginia to watch the FSU game with Kathy & Co. The bar had a lot of FSU fans but none that were particularly into the game. It didn't help that there was over two hours in combined rain delays. FSU looked good but I think anyone would look good against Western Carolina. They're not East Carolina, that's for sure. Catamounts, for the record, are mountain lions. They are not horses despite containing the word "mount". We'll know for sure how good FSU is when vaunted Chattanooga rolls into town next week.
I took the day off blogging but only because I was thinking of you.09-07-2006: Although not as gratifying as some wins in the past, I was able to fend off tchris and jamie in a little three-way poker last night. At different points in the night we all had huge chip leads and somehow blew them. We're all big bettors so it was a lot of fun despite the low number of people.

I really need a new computer. Mine shuts off after about five minutes of use due to overheating and I still have not been able to find the right replacement fan. I'm hoping by the week after my birthday to have enough money to buy the new one from Dell, even though they won't let me get it without the video card. I talked to their retarded sales/tech guy and asked them simply if they could not charge/install a video card. They do not have dual-monitor options and I wasn't ordering any monitors so I didn't need the card. He replied that they could not and I was out of luck. I replied by asking him if the computers were really built by hand like they say in the commercials. He said yes. I then asked if they guy installing it could just "leave out" the video card (I'd be throwing it out the day I got it) and have the person hand-writing my bill leave off the cost of it. He said no. Oh well.
