Weekend: August 02, 2009 - New Promotions New Promotions I had a relatively full weekend, complete with fancy dinners, new websites and lot, and I do mean a lot, of sitting at my computer. There was the pick-up of a new coupon code site; a hopefully nice complement to promotioncode.org. Speaking of pc.org, it got its first installment of a site redesign, complete with a resplendent little green dog. I used to really hate that thing but it's starting to grow on me.

On Saturday, Chris, Xan, and I went over to a colleague's (and former FSU alum) house for a nice dinner and hang-out session. There's nothing quite like a nice dinner to remind you of the squalor of being a bachelor. I have yet to cook a meal since I've moved to MA so eating something that someone else lovingly prepared was a nice change of pace.

My kids had their midterm on Friday and the average grade dropped to an 82%. Particularly devastating was the melodic dictation. It was my own fault for not giving them a better strategy for the modulatory measure. Today in class I didn't wear a suit so I could give them the "suit up" lecture since it's now the last week of class. Yeah, you can look nice in a dress shirt and tie but if you have to get showered and cleaned up a little extra effort to get into a suit goes a long way. Suit up!

In other news, I believe Obama to be a socialist now. I don't regret voting for him over McCain since at least Obama is smart but I think Chris V. had it right all along--Ron Paul.

Monday: August 03, 2009 - Solfege Gang Solfege Gang Yesterday we had a faculty meeting, my first, that lasted over four hours. Unlike a business meeting, things weren't discussed as "why are we doing this?" but rather a lot of fruitless idea sharing. Fortunately, Chris was on his game and kept us sheeple in line. Like him, I think aural skills classes should be pass/fail. I'm not a detail-oriented person so that would make my life easier: you can either convey a melody to me in a recognizable fashion or you can't. I also pulled out the pre-written Final Exam for my class and it's really easy. I had been preparing them for an onslaught of chromaticism and difficult modulations in super-long melodies so these mini-examples should pose absolutely no problem.

After the meeting we picked up Xan and then hit Longhorn for a steak night. Post-dinner I wrote a bunch of examples since I'm generously donating the hour after class to extra dictation practice and quickly running out of decent ones.

I'm glad BU isn't in my class to write down all the dumb things I say. A snippet from today: "It's like a drug deal. I asked you for a perfect fifth and you skimmed off the top and gave me a little more than an augmented fourth. Fortunately for you the Solfege Gang is not in the business of breaking legs."

Tuesday: August 04, 2009 - A little something... A little something... Yesterday I had one of those days. One of those rare, wonderful days that I can only describe as having...my A-game. Class went really well in the morning and then, after appeasing the Racquetball Gods with the sacrifice of a virgin, I was able to beat Chris. This was not so much a result of my skill at racquetball so much as my ability to so-hinder that at one point we collided. That's officially my new strategy: hinder to hurt.

In the afternoon we had some database malfunctions and then some more, but ultimately everything came out roses. There are only two days left in the semester and I'm looking forward to three weeks off. Two kids are taking the final after class tomorrow and the rest are finishing up Monday morning. Come 10am on Monday I'm a free man and can go back to my DC work hours of 10:30am - 2am.

Sweet.

Wednesday: August 12, 2009 - August 12 of 12 August 12 of 12
7:00am: If you could see my watch or three alarm clocks, they'd all say 7am. It's unfortunate my body wakes up at this time now.

7:10am: At a surprisingly empty Starbucks. Where my peeps at? I can't believe I just typed that.

7:30am: Inputting my grades for last session after much fretting.

8:15am: Taking Chompy to get some donuts. None for me, but she'll have two glazed. I didn't bother photographing the second trip to Starbucks.

8:30am: On the phone with various domain registrars and help desks. That was my theme of the day. Look how happy I am.

12:00pm: Getting some Panera, as I do every day, for lunch.

1:15pm: At the driving range / batting cages with Chris and Xan. I suck horribly but it's a lot of fun.

3:00pm: Ouch. I'm trying to man-up my hands and it's not working well.

4:00pm: Chompy waking me up from a little 30 minute nap. Back to work!

8:00pm: Quiznos break.

10:00pm: Well, well, well. Who was eating trash?

11:00pm: Watching the Cubs get manhandled by the Phillies. My favorite part was the fan throwing a full cup of beer on the head of Shane Victorino while he was making the catch. I hope they charge you with felony assault you piece of shit.

12:30am: Nerding out with Steve and our new game.

Thursday: August 13, 2009 - Before and After Before and After I talked with Steve for an hour on the phone yesterday while we worked out some more of our New Zealand plans, part of which was the application for an international drivers license. In order to get said license you have to submit two passport photos. Apparently, you can now take these yourself so, being cheap, that's what I decided to do. You're supposed to look miserable, as indicated in the sample photos so I tried my best to look world-weary, which was surprisingly easy considering I live in Lowell, MA.

Once I got everything cropped down to the appropriate sizes I figured I'd fix a few things. First up was the healthy dose(s) of unset broken noses that I sustained playing baseball in high school. I probably could have safely stopped after my nose job but I figured what the hay, I'll keep going. Since I've been going to the gym I decided to give myself the shoulders that are developing ahead of time. I then gave myself a haircut and, unlike in real life (unfortunately), I applied that hair to where it was more needed.

The end result? A stud that looks eerily like me.

Monday: August 17, 2009 - Star Wars Virgin Star Wars Virgin Over the weekend I lost my Star Wars virginity. I don't know if it's more rare to find a 30 year virgin-virgin or a 30 year old Star Wars virgin. I would be willing to bet, however, it is 100% to be 30 and be both types of virgin. Whatever, so Chris and Xan came over and we watched it on the big TV. It was pretty good and, unlike the last couple times I tried to lose it, I managed to stay awake the whole time. Apparently Jaba (two Bs?) wasn't in the original one and George Lucas put that scene off for two decades while the technology caught up. Again, whatever.

There's a new sheriff in Racquetballtown and he's got a dog named Chompy. Even though Chris and I split 2-2 I feel like I'm finally competitive. This level of skill doesn't come from...skill, but rather a basic understanding that if I can get myself into the middle of the court it greatly reduces by most serious weakness: running to the ball (really running in general).

I got my suits back from the dry cleaners and brought in all 11 of my dress shirts. Exciting times.

I'm so over living in my current apartment. I can't tell the story on here because it's X-rated but suffice it to say I'm counting the days until I move out. As if oddly-phrased eroticisms weren't enough, I've been watching HGTV and seeing 24 year olds buying houses with no downpayments is really starting to piss me off.

Thursday: August 20, 2009 - Whacked Whacked Chris whacked me in the neck with the ball during his drubbing of me in racquetball yesterday. Although I was competitive, I wasn't competitive enough to even win a single game. There were no wall-grabbing shots, no half-floor/half-wall scooters, and no ricochets off the little glass box that holds our keys. There was only him outplaying the hell out of me. It's been a while since I felt like I really got crushed. I guess I can reset the timer to 24 hours ago.

The new season of Dexter came in the mail so I watched a couple episodes of it between churning out work. I like this season--I like Miguel (he was also Matthew Santos on West Wing) as the ADA. I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering if Dexter is going to kill him. I would have to assume so since that's kind of the point of the show.

The Cubs are absolutely horrible and even though my former favorite player (MARMOL) is the new closer, I doubt it will make any difference. Barring a miracle they're not going to make the playoffs. There are worse things but it's always nice to see the Cubbies make it (and then get swept in the first round). On the bright side, college football is starting soon and it looks like there are a good number of Miami's players that are either hurt or in jail that could miss the game against FSU. Hooray!

Monday: August 24, 2009 - Attrition Attrition Yesterday morning I ran by school to drop some stuff off and pick up some oatmeal, walnut (hooray), and chocolate chip cookies from Sarah. Apparently there had been a batch of upwards of 100 and I was the lucky beneficiary of a couple dozen. I took the liberty of chowing some in the car on my way home to make sure they weren't poisonous. Nope, not poisonous or else I'd be dead several times over already. I tried to get myself on the UML website so that when students lose their syllabus on Day 2 they can find my email to send me pathetic lies as to why they were absent throughout the semester. No dice yet though.

I made a quick stop in NH in the afternoon to buy Chompy some more dog food and to get a few more ties. I also dropped off the rest of my clothes at the dry cleaner. When I say "the rest of my clothes" I don't mean like, the rest of my suits. I mean the rest of my clothes. Giving them my stuff to clean is way more efficient than actually doing my laundry. It's super-cheap up here so I think I'll bring them all my non-undergarments/towels from now on.

In the early evening I picked up Chris for some racquetball. We'd each been having rough days/better part of a week so it was going to be a get-the-aggression-out set. In between hitting each other regularly we managed to hit the front wall once or twice. Normally there's one MAYBE two hits on the other person during a set but yesterday...wow. It was like an Alaska wilderness--drilled all over the place. He might have been the recipient of the hardest shot I've ever hit and I could see the welt through his shirt. He managed to nail me right in the face though so it all evened out.

Wednesday: August 26, 2009 - Getting Close Getting Close The Cubs are all but officially out of the playoff race and, for the first time in a while, I don't really care. I still watch the games but I have no expectation that they're going to win. It's like it's the 1990s all over again. Marmol sucked last night and even though the Cubs still won 9-4, he walked the first three guys he faced and gave up two runs. It might be time to invest in a real closer.

I'm hanging onto my playoff hopes in fantasy baseball but I'm in fifth and only the top six make the playoffs.

Over the weekend I watched The Empire Strikes Back with Chris and Xan and it was pretty good. I liked that there was no overarching story and things just kind of happened without the aggravating over-foreshadowing of the first one. Tonight we're going to watch the last one.

It's almost football season--Quincy University takes on Indiana State tonight but I can't watch it because ESPN Gameday isn't offered up here. That sucks. Quincy was the school that I said I could be the starting cornerback for and everyone seemed to disagree. I stand by it, especially now that I'm cut from going to the gym. Not cut enough to beat Chris in racquetball, but certainly ripped enough to knock some 18 year old over while he was trying to run past me.

It turned autumn up here yesterday and the weather gorgeous. If you could remove all the buildings in Lowell and replace them with a real city it would be breathtaking but alas, the roaming mobs of the poor block the views of the majority of trees. Whatever, once it gets a little colder they'll have to take refuge in the caves outside the city limits.

Good Things Take Time... -6 days until FSU Football (2010)

Random Picture...
In Spanish, Cosumel means Under Construction. It looked like a construction zone practically everywhere.

Time Machine: 09-10-2009 · 09-10-2008 · 09-10-2007 · 09-10-2006 I took the day off blogging but only because I was thinking of you.09-10-2008: It seems like just yesterday I was dreaming about Dr. Spencer and the Corkasaurus. Turns out it's been a whole year. Last night I was talking to Chris Green and he's going to do a guest entry next week to catch everyone up on his life so get ready! Later in the evening I was thinking to myself that it would nice if a bunch of people would write "catch-up" entries so that we could find out all of the exciting things that have been happening since we interacted on a daily basis. Even the people that I've seen/talked to somewhat regularly, I don't really know the full-blown details of what's going on with their lives. Here's where you come in--you too can write an entry to catch everyone up. Send me an email and I'll give you a date from which to start. Then you can post on here in the next few days/weeks. Just think--between 150 and 200 people reading all about your interesting life! And to think I get to live that each and every day. 09-10-2007: Apparently Britney is back after performing at the MTV Music Awards over the weekend. Everyone railed against her out of shape body and poor performance. While I won't comment on performance (I didn't see it, although I'm sure it was a abysmal), she just had two kids. She's not a miracle worker, she can only look so good.

In sadder news, it looks like my mentally-vacating grandmother is headed for an assisted living facility. That sounds really cold but for the past year my dad has dutifully driven over there to attend to her every day and took a sabbatical from work the past six months and she apparently can't even remember that he visits at all. There's been some speculation that since she's lived alone for so long her memory deteriorated into nothing because she never really had to use it; she's at the point now where she can easily ask you the same question six times in ten minutes. It's really sad. I really don't envy the decision my parents have to make at all.
09-10-2006: Chompy, what's this? jamie and I scored some tickets from her sister's husband's parents for the Troy game so naturally we went. The game even more horrible in person than it could have been on TV. FSU couldn't hold onto the football to save their lives. De'Cody Fagg was the only trustworthy receiver and there were no, and I mean no, trustworthy rushers. I wish I knew what went on in Lorenzo Booker's head. I bet it's something like, "'Lo, listen" (it should be pointed out that Lorenzo sounds strikingly similar to Alex) "don't dance this time. Just run straight ahead." Then he gets the ball and his feet take over. "Damn it, feet. Stop doing this, we've been over this a zillion times!" And that goes on like that every play.

Their damn band would not shut up. They played under our band the whole time since of course the eight members of the TSU band could not be heard over the Marching Dorks. They played when we had the ball...or Troy had the ball...or there was a timeout. However, the largest trigger to their playing was...our band playing. Which was funny because there were so few of them that you only realized this after FSU's song stopped and the Troy band kept going. Anyway it was horrible. Next week is Clemson and I'm going back solely to beat the shit out of their fan who kept tapping my head last time. I know Jamie doesn't believe it but after eight months of fighting at least twice a week I'm feeling pretty confident I could kick some frat-ass.
